Just Walking Around by John Ashbery

What name do I have for you?
Certainly there is not name for you
In the sense that the stars have names
That somehow fit them. Just walking around,

An object of curiosity to some,
But you are too preoccupied
By the secret smudge in the back of your soul
To say much and wander around,

Smiling to yourself and others.
It gets to be kind of lonely
But at the same time off-putting.
Counterproductive, as you realize once again

That the longest way is the most efficient way,
The one that looped among islands, and
You always seemed to be traveling in a circle.
And now that the end is near

The segments of the trip swing open like an orange.
There is light in there and mystery and food.
Come see it.
Come not for me but it.
But if I am still there, grant that we may see each other.

There used to be a time when i didn’t believe in fate.

I mean, I still don’t.

That is not to say that I believe that the universe was begat from chaos and swirling sparks and silent explosions of color and light, whatever light is anyway.

I just don’t believe that “everything happens for a reason,” as some (my mother) would say.

But recently I have been more attentive to the little coincidental trip wires that I seem to keep setting off.

For instance, someone mentions a mutual friend in passing.

If I later see that persons name written or typed somewhere (it has to be someplace odd, not on facebook or anything), that’s a red flag.

If it happens a third time, i feel comsmically compelled reach out to them. This has almost always led to eerily important events in my life.

Long story short:

1. I jog Woodlawn Park,.

2. I’m too tired to walk jog back.

3. I call a friend for a ride, no anwer

4. I am forced to jog back.

5. On the way home I catch a stray kitten, I pass Ashby street and decide to name the kitten Ashby.

6. This morning I turn in the kitten to a cat rescue station.

7. At lunch some friends say that another mutual friend needs to be picked up from West Ashby Street (that’s two)

8. While reading a blog I come across the Poet John Ahbery.

Close enough for me.

I usually randomly stumble across an author/writer/artist to become fixated on for weeks at a time anyway.

I’ll let you know if all this leads to anything life changing.
